KFAS

Mission
“Stimulate and catalyse the advancement of STI for the benefit of society, research and enterprise in Kuwait”

Vision
“A thriving culture of science, technology and innovation (STI) for a sustainable Kuwait”

Overview

KFAS was established in 1976 by an Amiri Decree under the direction of the late Amir of Kuwait, H. H. Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah with a vision to create and nurture a thriving culture of science, technology, and innovation for a sustainable Kuwait. Its Charter embodied the pledged commitment of the local shareholding companies to fund KFAS by contributing 5% of their net annual profits to serve this purpose, which, over the years, has been reduced to 1%.

Thus, to date, KFAS’s journey to promote STI and encourage a culture of research and development within Kuwait’s society, has made tremendous strides, considering the many challenges in adopting a culture of STI for socioeconomic growth and national development. This includes building a well-equipped STI workforce to meet the socio-economic challenges that Kuwait and other countries are bound to face, especially in encouraging and educating the youth. The Foundation has focused its efforts on the promotion and advocacy of science, technology and innovation through the dissemination of knowledge through various strategic mechanisms, including scientific publications, books and community-based events. Through collaborative efforts with local and international institutions, KFAS’s efforts are also aimed at raising the quality of research and driving innovative solutions for national priority areas. Furthermore, KFAS continues to work on enhancing efforts in building a STI competent private sector, fostering means to increase their R&D capacity and increase private sector investment in STI. Finally, through their regional and international collaborations with academic, research and corporations, KFAS had provided the local community with greater access to partnerships focused on enhancing the national science and technology platform.

The Foundation has also established and funded specialized centers of excellence as subsidiaries of the Foundation, to address national challenges, through research and development. These are:

  • The Scientific Center
  • Dasman Diabetes Institute
  • Sabah Al-Ahmad Center for Giftedness & Creativity
  • Jaber Al-Ahmad Center for Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging
  • KFAS academy
  • The Advancement of Science Publishing & Distribution company

In addition, KFAS has established Al Taqaddum Al Elmi Company, the Foundation’s publishing arm and most recently, KFAS Academy, an online university for continued education.

It is through these defined strategic objectives that the Foundation continues to strive to achieve its mission and vision, and catalyze the change needed in the country to foster its future development and long-term sustainability.
